Popular-Level & Practical Theology from the GRN
Do you appreciate thoughtful and interesting podcasts? When on the road for 20, 30, or 60 minutes to a pastoral visit, while running an errand, or going to a committee meeting, I find that a theologically rich podcast episode can help me redeem the time. Over the past several months, I have especially enjoyed several new podcasts produced by men involved with the Gospel Reformation Network (GRN) General Council.
Since launching the GRN General Council, we have encouraged the men on our roster to connect with one another and to discuss possible avenues for collaborative ministry. One of the ways that some of the men have been working together and with friends throughout the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) has been in the production of some podcasts that I would like to share with you.
All of these are available on multiple streaming services, and it is simple to add yourself to their subscription lists for convenient listening while in your car, your study, or at home. I am listing them below in no particular order.
The Larger for Life Podcast
A podcast on the Westminster Larger Catechism, hosted by PCA Teaching Elders Matt Adams, Derrick Brite, Nick Bullock, Sean Morris, and Stephen Spinnenweber. This theologically stimulating podcast explores a rich catechetical resource that has sadly been all but forgotten by the church, the Westminster Larger Catechism.
The Presbyterian & Reformed Churchmen Podcast
Pastor George Sayour (pictured in the center, above) is a GRN General Council member and hosts a podcast in which he has discussions with Ruling Elders in the PCA and other Reformed denominations. In each episode, Pastor Sayour connects ministry to work and work to ministry as he discusses the unique callings and challenges of being a Ruling Elder.
The Kingdom Polemics Podcast
Pastor Aldo Leon is a GRN General Council member and hosts the Kingdom Polemics podcast in which he seeks to recapture the comprehensive and optimistic Kingdom theology of the Westminster Standards with clarity, conviction, and confrontation. Kingdom Polemics advances a spirituality that is gospel, worship, and church-centric and yet creational, institutional, civil, and familial connected.
The Polity Matters Podcast
General Council member Scott Edburg co-hosts Polity Matters with PCA Pastors Ben Ratliff and Jared Nelson. This podcast explores the foundations of Presbyterian church government by unpacking and discussing the historic polity of the PCA.
In addition to these newer podcasts from members of the GRN General Council and our friends, you might find these two established programs from members of our General and Executive Councils especially interesting.
Theology on the Go
Dr. Jonathan L. Master (President, Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary), our most recent addition to the Executive Council, has an outstanding short-form podcast which he co-hosts with Dr. James Dolezal on the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals platform. Each episode handles a theological subject or new Reformed book in about 20-30 minutes. This is a great podcast to enjoy while driving around town.
Mortification of Spin
Another longstanding and widely popular podcast from the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals features General Council member Todd Pruitt, who co-hosts this program with Dr. Carl Trueman of Grove City College. Each episode tackles a subject of perennial and pressing importance as the hosts explore the spiritual and theological dimensions of current books and matters of social significance.
While this is not the place to list the many podcast episodes in which our council members have been guests on other programs (e.g., Presbycast; Guilt, Grace, Gratitude; Confessing Our Hope; etc.), I hope that the annotated list I’ve compiled and presented above helps fill your car, headphones, and ears with edifying theological content from those affiliated with the GRN.
